My second research paper is based on my series, This Is Not, that I created last year and continue to build upon. The basic summary of this work is that the polaroids (Instax, more specifically) depict images that I have captured throughout my life accompanied by text that is sometimes a factual description of the image, but is sometimes completely false. Dispersed throughout the series are images that contain the words "THIS IS NOT" scrawled across their surfaces. Those pieces confuse the viewer and cause them to question the truthfulness that images always seem to have, simply because they are images. My senior thesis work is heading in a similar direction - text will accompany the images but instead of causing the viewer to question the truth of the photographic, the text will add to the truthfulness by informing the viewer of elements that are important to gain a larger understanding of the photograph but are not present in the images.
